Making connections that count. How to infiltrate spheres of influence the JT Foxx way.
- Making an impact when meeting someone of importance
First impressions are crucial in business because as we all know, people only do business with people they like. Making that first impression is what you want to focus on when you know you are going to meet someone that is either famous, successful or can help you in business. It takes 3 seconds for someone to decide whether they like you or not, and if they don’t, it is very hard to try and change their mind.
- Do your homework
JT Foxx had the opportunity to sit down and talk with international rock star Bret Michaels. JT made sure that he did his homework before meeting the star, so he took the time to google things about him, check all his social feeds and find more personal information so he could touch on them in the interview.
- Providing value before asking for something
If you don’t provide someone with value, there really is no need for that person to take the time and talk with you.
JT adds value to Michaels when he brings up Steve Wozniak, CO founder of Apple who happens to be a friend of JT. Michael’s says he is a fan of Wozniak and JT responds that he can connect the two. JT provided value to Michaels before he asked for anything. Now Michaels will feel more inclined to give something back to JT.
- Build common ground
The first time JT saw Michaels as a performer was at the Eric Trump Foundation event. Michaels is highly involved in the foundation, as JT already knows, and is one of the first things JT brings up in their conversation. Finding that common ground is crucial. It links you with whoever you are talking to and makes them feel like they know you better.
There are many ways to find common ground and that goes back to doing your homework; research the person, find out what their hobbies are, who they follow and their personal likes and dislikes. If you find a common ground, no matter how small, use it.
Here are some of the questions that JT asked Michaels.
How do you succeed?
If you are true to who you are, you will always succeed. The harder you work, the higher the chance your dreams will come true. In every business you are in, whether you are a rock star, in real estate or work online, everything is coming at you at once. Someone sees what you are doing and they will want to do it better. They will want to beat and take you down. You have to have a competitive nature to stand up and fight for it, or you will not stay afloat.
At this point in your life, what is most important to you?
It’s everything. I never feel that one thing has to be more important than another, or that you have to subtract from something to do other things in your life. People in life always think if they want to do something then they have to give something up. As a lifelong diabetic, it is important for me to give back to children and help them.
Your song Every Rose Has It’s Thorn has made you millions. Does it ever get old to perform it?
No way. I wrote that song here in Dallas. People told me the song had too much pop in it but I love pop, I love all genres. I got into music because I love it. I wanted to be a rock star and do whatever I wanted. I didn’t want to be told what to do.
What is your business philosophy?
It’s very simple, I don’t take no for an answer. I find a way to get it done. My motto is have fun and get it done. You can have fun doing things and enjoy it. Life is too short to not enjoy what you do.
Michaels is the perfect example of someone who does what he loves and has fun doing it. If you do what you love, you will never have to work a day in your life.
Getting the opportunity to talk or interview someone of importance is a blessing. Not only because it’s great for marketing purposes, but because if you are remembered by that person, it’s huge. Follow and execute these important tips and you are sure to leave a lasting impression.
